ATLAS BARRIERS AT HOSPITAL HELIPAD

Rising arm barriers from the Atlas Group's Agies range are in use at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The hospital, formerly and still known outside of the local TV news as Treliske Hospital, is a teaching hospital on the outskirts of Truro.
The barriers are used to control parking on the site in order to ensure the helipad is always clear for the helicopter to land and is also immediately accessible by ambulance from the A & E department.
The helicopter service was inaugurated in 1987 and was the UK's first dedicated helicopter emergency medical service. It has been called out to over 20,000 emergencies.

ATLAS HELP IMPROVE SCHOOL SECURITY

The safety and security of school pupils, staff and premises has never been as important as it is today. But according to access control specialists Atlas Group the automated gates and barrier systems installed at many schools are unsafe to use and do not comply with current regulations.
The Company's managing director, Joe Baker, said: "In the past six months we have attended local schools to audit the safety of their automated gate and barrier systems.
"Although there were a handfull of exceptions, we found that the majority did not comply and required modification or upgrading to ensure hazard-free operation for child safety and the safety of others."
Atlas is urging schools to check their security systems to ensure children and staff are safe from intruders, and that the possibility of unauthorised access and damage by vandals is minimised.
"If a school is not confident that it is as secure as possible it should call in access control specialists to check. Most reputable companies will not charge for this service", said Joe Baker.

SIA not to be abolished

On March 24 the House of Lords passed an amendment to the Public Bodies Bill to take the SIA (Security Industry Authority) out of the list of quangos to be abolished.

However, the Government has stressed this does not mean there has been a change in policy as it remains their intention to change the form of the SIA, but that this can be best achieved by new legislation.

The Government's aim is to have the new organisation in place by the end of 2013.

New Gate Safety Organisation

GATE SAFE has been set up following the death of two children and other potentially fatal incidents during last year.
Its goal is to bring together a broad cross-section of manufacturers, installers and those organisations responsible for safety in order to look at how the current safety measures can be improved to try and eliminate as far as possible any future accidents.
A well attended summit meeting unanimously agreed that urgent action was needed to stop any further injuries or fatalities caused by automated gates. Actions to be implemented included putting pressure where necessary to bring gate safety to the top of the political agenda, and to set up a working party to look at ways of achieveing safety regulation compliance for all installations.

Four ways to improve security of your home

If you live in an area likely to be targeted by thieves, particularly if you have an open driveway, there are many options as to how you can improve security to deter thieves or trespassers including:
1. Installing automatic residential driveway gates to keep out unwelcome visitors.
2. Adding anti-ram raid bollards and parking posts.
3. Fitting motorised driveway chain barriers.
4. Having manual or remote operated garage doors fitted with secure locking systems.
Whatever your requirements it is essential that only a properly qualified installer is used to ensure the equipment fitted meets the requirements, is reliable and above all, safe to use.
